Complementary Studies 2000-01
Students in all programs must complete courses in Complementary Studies amounting to at least 225 AU. These courses must include:
Linkage 36 AU
Engineering Economics 36 AU
Humanities and Social Sciences 108 AU
In addition, elements of studies in Communications
and Management are also required, but the weightings are not specified, and they may appear as components in technical courses.
The exact requirements vary from program to program. Details are given in the description of the curriculum for each program. Where choice is allowed, the following Tables give a partial list of acceptable courses.

The ability to communicate adequately, both orally and in writing, is developed within each department's curriculum in a variety of ways, including the evaluation of written reports and of oral presentations.
There are also courses designed specifically to improve a student's ability to communicate in English. Some of these are listed below. In some programs one or other of these courses may be included in the core of the program.

Students are free to choose from among the Humanities and Social Science courses listed below; the only constraints will be imposed by timetable conflicts and prerequisites specified for the courses themselves. Linkage courses offered in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science also qualify as H&SS courses, but can only be counted once.

Appeal can be made to the Operations Committee for permission to take any course offered by the University not listed here as an H&SS Complementary Study elective. However courses in the Languages confined to conversation skills or technical translation may not be used to satisfy requirements in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
The academic units in Arts and Science courses can vary widely; students are advised to check with the Faculty Office if in doubt.

Completing the Requirements for Complementary Studies
Most of the programs in the Faculty have courses in Complementary Studies built into the Core of the curriculum, and/or have portions of technical courses assigned to topics in Complementary Studies. If the requirements for Linkage, H&SS, and Economics have been satisfied, and the total number of AU including the Complementary Studies in the Core is less than 225 AU or is less than the minimum specified for the Program, the balance of the studies can be satisfied by any of the course listed above, or any of the following courses in Applied Science, or in the School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) or in the School of Business (COMM).

Students in Applied Science who wish to take management courses offered by the School of Business must first complete COMM 200 or COMM 244 and meet other prerequisites as specified in the School of Business Undergraduate Calendar. All courses offered by the School of Business require a minimum of 50% in any specified prerequisites.
