Vision Statement

To be the quality leader in Canadian higher learning, developing exceptional students and scholars for citizenship and leadership in a sustainable global society.

Goal One

To continue to attract and retain students with outstanding potential and diverse backgrounds from across Canada and around the world.

Admission will be determined by the potential to contribute as citizens and leaders, not by the ability to pay.

Objectives:

  • Ensuring annual expenditures on student aid, scholarships and work study remain the highest in Canada
  • Being the first Canadian university to offer "means blind" admission
  • Intensifying international and out-of-province recruiting
  • Incorporating leadership, work and volunteer activity into admission criteria
  • Being first among Canadian universities in the proportion of students receiving national and international awards.

Goal Two

To strengthen an environment which stimulates exceptional research and teaching.

A dynamic relationship between scholarly inquiry and creative teaching is essential to the achievement of Queen's mission and vision.

Objectives:

  • Hiring and retaining outstanding teachers/scholars
  • Supporting them with up-to-date facilities, information, resources and technology
  • Developing initiatives to further integrate teaching with the research and scholarly activities of the University
  • Being ranked among the top three Canadian universities in national and international recognition of teaching and research accomplishments

Goal Three

To provide rigorous, relevant and challenging programs of study.

Queen's undergraduate and graduate programs will encourage students to expand their personal horizons and provide a basis and framework for continued personal and intellectual growth.

Objectives:

  • Facilitating curriculum and program development to maintain existing strengths and foster scholarship and interdisciplinary teaching and learning
  • Ensuring curriculum and program development reflects the emerging global context of life and leadership
  • Encouraging second language acquisition
  • Utilizing the size, location and strengths of Queen's to cultivate habits of reflective and critical thinking, lifelong creative inquiry, risk-taking and innovative action.

Goal Four

To prepare graduates for roles as citizens and leaders of a sustainable global society.

Queen's must use its unique "broader learning environment" to facilitate acquisition of the life and leadership skills necessary for a sustainable global society.

Objectives:

  • Nourishing the "broader learning environment" to enhance opportunities for community service, cultural growth and personal development
  • Expanding opportunities for students and faculty to study and work internationally
  • Assessing and recognizing national and international experience in admissions and/or program requirements
  • Recognizing and celebrating the community service activities of students, faculty, staff, trustees and alumni.
