"Generally, employers will not expect that the interns they hire know how to do the job perfectly before they even arrive. It is more common for them to choose people who are well-rounded, capable of learning quickly in a new setting, and willing to take on new tasks. Engineering at Queen's, with its common first year and cross-discipline programs, really prepared me well."
Dan Pearce, Mechanical Engineering
Summer Student at General Motors
QUIP Intern at Celestica
"You wouldn't buy a car without test driving it first. The QUIP experience has given me the opportunity to tackle real-life non-academic challenges that will confront me when I graduate so that that I'll be prepared when I have to enter the workforce."
Eric Tam, Electrical Engineering
Engineering Development Manager at Research in Motion, Waterloo.
"Having almost completed my internship, the biggest benefit that I think Queen's 16- month program has over short 4 month programs is your ability to get really good long term projects. I was trained and given the task to complete a major project involving all of GM's Canadian Plants. General Motors put the time and money into training me because I was able to devote a whole year to creating an air quality tracking system. I was able to become a sort of in-house expert on dispersion modelling and my boss frequently comes to ask me questions. It feels really good to be able to teach him about what I know, instead of me having to go to him. Nearly a year into my internship, I finished my first 200 plus page report. Had I only been at GM for four months I wouldn't have had sole responsibility for a project, nor received the valuable training and experience that I did."
Jennifer Haverhals, Civil Engineering
Environmental Engineer, General Motors
