Kelsea with the Competitive Dance Team
The Queen's University Competitive Dance Team

Kelsea Fitzpatrick is a fourth year Chemical Engineering student in the biomedical stream. As an outstanding student Kelsea has worked hard the last four years building a strong academic resume and preparing to attend graduate school.

For Kelsea, however, academics aren't all that have kept her busy here at Queen's. As the captain of the Queen's University Competitive Dance Team, Kelsea's responsibilities extend far beyond just the classroom. Leading 18 talented dancers, choreographing jazz and hip hop routines, and preparing for competitions, keep Kelsea, and her co-captain Paige Cooper busy, but happy.

The dance team performs any number of their ten routines at basketball games throughout first and second semester, and normally attends up to two competitions a year. As a highly competitive team, and one of the only student-run groups in North America, Kelsea and the rest of the girls on the team have exceptionally high standards. Last year the Dance Team won the University Challenge Cup at the Terpsichore Dance Competition at the University of Guelph. Of the 14 teams normally entered, Queen's DT has placed in the top three every year for the past four. This year Kelsea and the rest of the team hope to take the cup home once more!

Having been a dancer since the age of three, and a part of the Queen's Dance Team since her first year, adding dancing to her busy schedule is no new challenge for Kelsea. Not only has she been a key member of the Dance Team throughout her time at school, she also participates in a number of Queen's Dance Club classes and has choreographed and participated in the Vogue Charity Fashion Show.

So what keeps Kelsea coming back year after year, especially with the challenges of balancing classes, schoolwork, and her extracurriculars? "It's a great group of girls!" says Kelsea. "...With this team comes support, great teamwork, and leadership. Dance Team has taught me these three great qualities... I wouldn't trade it for the world!"

What's next for Kelsea? She plans to return to her hometown of Calgary to attend U of C for graduate studies in biomedical engineering. Kelsea is one more student in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science whose passion and talent make Queen's Engineers such an interesting and diverse group. Keep an eye out for the Queen's Dance Team as they hope to bring the cup home once more!
